@Dave,

Maybe I have done something wrong with my very first multi-plant photo?
The list of the plants mentioned is not complete, only two are listed while I've tagged 9 different species.
http://garden.org/apps/sets/vi...

Just noticed that I have the same issue with the 2nd photo; only 3 are listed while I've tagged 16.

If you don't specifically link them to the plants in the database then they won't show up in their list. For example, the tag for that Onoclea sensibilis is actually the numeric plant ID of the plant itself. So the database finds the link and can print out the nice features including the full name and link to the plant in the "Plants tagged in this photo" area.

But the other tags just have words typed into them and that doesn't help the system make those connections between database entries and a particular tag.

Myriam,

I've found that it's easiest to copy and paste the DB link from your browser into the new box for each plant you're working with. Working with two windows open is the best way to do this.

Sorry Dave Confused I have only typed in the names in all of the boxes, I didn't think of putting in the 'numeric plant ID of the plant', so how did the system then put those in the list?

But apart from that if you want the system to find links you have not to type the name but the numeric plant ID, or both? Sorry this is very new to me!

Chelle's tip is the right answer. And it's what I recommend.

As for how the other ones got the way they are, maybe a plants admin came and edited them to change them from a word to an ID. I know Evan has fixed a few like that.

I managed to edit only one of the boxes; Nymphaea alba, then, when I tried the next ones I got this on my screen, I couldn't delete the box to make another with the plant link..like f.ex.

Ah, I think I know now why it didn't work for the next tags, as I had checked how it came out when I edited the first tag and forgot to click on 'manage the tags on that image' again. Rolling my eyes.
Thanks Dave, I think that explained it!

I've been wondering about this since I started putting up a few MP pics. All of the tags on mine were done by typing words. About 20% of them connect to the plant and are listed at the top, even though many of the others have the exact botanical epithet typed. It's been mysterious to me too. I usually type binomial epithets with no cultivar name and can't find a pattern to the found/connected plants vs. the unfound.

Tiffany, I can't help with the sedum connection (your first example) but the third MP photo questions you have can be answered by opening those DB entries. Persian Shield (Strobilanthes auriculatus var. dyeriana), syn. Strobilanthes dyerianus made the connection. Spur Flower (Plectranthus Mona Lavender), where Mona Lavender is the Trade name and 'Plepalila', the cultivar name. I hope this helps, if not let me know.

Also we (the plant admins) will edit an image making connections where we can. The connection is made by opening the DB entry of the plant in question. Deleting the existing tag in the MP photo, creating a new tag and pasting the url of the DB entry into the tag title box.

This type of connection is the most helpful because the MP photo then shows on the DB page of that particular plant.

I usually create the tags by having two windows/tabs open at the same time and in one I go and find each plant in the database. From there I either copy the URL as Evan mentioned or as I have now gotten in a habit of doing, copy the plant ID#, and then pasting that into the tag field. It shows as copied at first but once you view the finished image, it's now linked to the database entry and the image also now appears in that entry.

Thanks for the inputs! I've been editing the tags on the pics I've put up. I don't mind but it would be a lot easier (and infinitely less time consuming) to just type them. I'll do that, then go fix the ones that don't connect. One of the above examples that I've since fixed was a typo on my part, so sorry about that. Until asking, I thought I was just missing something that was supposed to pop up for me to select the plant I'm trying to indicate but I guess that's not the case, so good to know.

Some basic examples leave me confused though. 'Coleus' connects but 'Begonia' doesn't...

Any of the ones I'd typed. I've fixed all but the last (first uploaded) couple pics, so the examples no longer exist. TY for asking though!

If you are just typing a generic name like begonia or coleus because you may not know the cultivar and there isn't an existing parent plant/custom database entry for it, it can't link up. We have a generic coleus page Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides) but not one for begonia yet.

Typos are the best reason to link them from the database entry! nodding And if you have an inventory list of your plants, it should be easy to find the entry you need for tagging.

TY for the reply! I would notice a typo if I was expecting a plant to connect. After uploading a few that partially did, partially didn't, I didn't investigate what got listed at the top of my pics after.

Is this the generic Begonia page? It's the one I've been using if I didn't feel like finding something more specific.
Begonias (Begonia)

It's not difficult to find the URL to paste for each plant, just takes a lot longer. Type the words on the tag and that's done. Alternatively, open other window, type plant name, click search or hit enter, select proper entry from list, copy URL, back to other window, paste. Not that you don't already know that, but talking through the steps really highlights how much longer. If I could know what method or formula of typing a name causes the link to be automatic, that would be the easiest of all. I couldn't find a pattern to it. Maybe someone who knows how it works could. That would be great fun, very useful to know! At this point, I'll type them, then "go add" the ones that don't just show up.

Typed into tags & connected:
Kalanchoe longiflora
Crassula ovata 'Gollum'
Senecio crassissimus
Coleus 'Florida Sun Jade'
Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender'
Ipomoea batatas 'Pink Frost'
Ipomoea batatas 'Margarita'
Strobilanthes dyerianus
Begonia 'Castaway'
Aglaonema modestum
Calathea ornata
Tradescantia fluminensis 'Variegata'
Dracaena marginata 'Tricolor'
"Pony tail palm" = no connection. "Ponytail palm" = connects to Beaucarnea recurvata (which says 'pony tail palm.')
Typing: Sedum, variegated
connects to:
Amur Stonecrop (Phedimus selskanianus 'Variegata')
Here's a test image to see/confirm all of these:
