I don't see any entries in the database for Laeliocatanthe orchids. Hopefully one of the moderators will create an entry so that you can add your lovely photo. How cool to have a plant named after your grandfather! ![]() ~ Playing in the dirt is my therapy ... and I'm in therapy a lot! ~ |

Mindy: I forgot to say that your plant looks great; love the color of the blooms! ~ Playing in the dirt is my therapy ... and I'm in therapy a lot! ~ |
This appears to be one of the hybrid genera preceded by an "x." I've created an entry for XLaeliocatanthe 'Clark Pitt.' Orchid (Laeliocatanthe Clark Pitt) |
Apparently x Laeliocatanthe is an invalid name. The reason cited in IPNI is "nom. inval. see Art. 34.1b ICBN (2000)" and Tropicos. "Nomenclature Reason: contrary to Art. 34.1b ICBN (2000)." Kew. This page at the IOS notes syn. genus name Laeliocattleya. IPNI, Tropicos, Kew. I don't know Orchids so my question is; would adding x Laeliocattleya 'Clark Pitt' be appropriate? PS ![]() Zuzu I cross posted. Evan |
I wish I had waited a minute and left it for you, Kent. ![]() |

Orchid names are such a challenge. I have a list (don't remember where I got it) but it shows: Laeliocatanthe (Lcn.) is: Cattleya x Gurianthe x Laelia Laeliocattleya (Lc.) is: Cattleya x Laelia ~ Playing in the dirt is my therapy ... and I'm in therapy a lot! ~ |
That's the information I found too. |
Here's the entry for Laeliocatanthe Clark Pitt at the IOS. Schombocattleya is a syn. accepted on IPNI but everything else is as you note Mindy and Lin. Since the ICRA (IOS) accepts the name, it seems safe to keep. I'd bet there's an interesting back story in there somewhere.![]() Evan |

So, will the genus Laeliocatanthe be added to the database or should Mindy upload her photo to the link zuzu supplied earlier (XLaeliocatanthe)? ~ Playing in the dirt is my therapy ... and I'm in therapy a lot! ~ |
Go ahead and add the photo to the linked entry. The entry name can be edited later if everyone agrees it should be Laeliocatanthe instead of XLaeliocatanthe. |
Whatever you think is good with me Zuzu. At least this time we didn't cross post. Evan |
That's right, and this time I won't call you Kent. ![]() |
