I'm hoping to edit together a short article for Daylily Week on helpful tools for daylily gardening. Some examples are: clump-separating tools, seedling starter pots/medium, organic and non-organic fertilizers, permanent pots, shovels/hoes/garden forks, watering tools, etc. If you have any tools that you keep handy for any reason when you are going to work with your daylilies, would you consider posting here, possibly with pictures or links to pics and suppliers, so that we can gather together ideas to make people's daylily gardening easier and more pleasant? ![]() ![]() ![]() Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of old; seek what those of old sought. — Basho Daylilies that thrive? click here! ![]() |

no pic, but i always have an old heavy garden knife useful for dividing. Also I always have my felco pruners for trimming leaves. I have used an old pruning saw to cut apart really big clumps, when the knife would not do it.. You want it to be an old one, because it will ruin it for pruning trees / shrubs. Most of my tools are pretty standard among what you have listed above. I do keep an old pair of shop shears similar to these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008J80K9G/ I use them to cut foliage back whenever I need to. I don't bother with new ones because, especially if I am dealing with insects or rust or whatever, I disinfect them with a mild bleach solution. The other tool that I love. LOVE LOVE LOVE, is my Wilcox All-Pro long handled trowel. I bought it on sale from Hostas Direct but they seem to be out of stock. They can be a little hard to come by sometimes. I plan on order others for general use around the garden (weeding etc) because they are fantastic. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008J80K9G/ I use this to dig and divide daylilies in areas I can't adequately get to with a shovel. Heck, I have also use it to clear ice from gutters and remove ferns and periwinkle vine. The thing is a beast - still as good as new! It's been abused my me, the weather, and even peed on by my dog ( ![]() |
