Springtime Solution for Slug Problems Around Your Hostas

When the hosta "eyes" appear, I mix one part household ammonia with ten parts of water and pour this mixture around the eyes close to the plant. It doesn't hurt the plants, but it does dissolve the eggs that are laid around the roots. It has reduced the slug population noticeably. I also pour the ammonia solution directly on slugs that I see on the deck. Dissolves them right away.

I like to keep a bottle of ammonia in the garage so when I see one under a flower pot or climbing up the side of the house I can spray him dead. They dissolve right away.
I did a 20% mixture as an experiment last year when I found they were climbing up the stalks and eating holes in my daylily flowers. I sprayed into the crown and around the outside where I thought they would hide or lay eggs and it solved the problem.
I would never be without it. Thanks for sharing this wonderful tip!

After I wrote that tip I discovered the Ammonia solution worked on emerging Ligularias as well.My ligularias seem to attract the smaller yellow orange slugs.

That is a good tip to remember!
To keep slugs off, I drop pieces of copper wire,
or a copper penny near the plants, and I sprinkle Epsom salts near as well.
Some plants do not like Epsom salts, so a little only.
