I learned a lot, especially about using peroxide in new ways that will help my garden stay healthy, thanks! ![]() ![]() Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of old; seek what those of old sought. — Basho Daylilies that thrive? click here! ![]() |

Tina and Ann - H2O2 works well for plants in many different ways! But hydrogen peroxide definitely helps prevent seed and seedling rot when sowing and growing plants from seeds! I always make sure that I have a bottle or two around my home .... since I use it all the time! Glad the article was helpful to you both! ![]() What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us. Garden Rooms and Becky's Budget Garden |

This is an excellent article, really well illustrated with great pictures. And is that one of your seedlings? It's beautiful! Great job, Becky! ![]() Betty |

Thank you Margaret! Glad that you enjoyed it! Betty - Thank you so much! And yes the first photo with daylily blooms (with the little frog hidden inside the one bloom) was grown from a seed shared with me by Sandy (Seedsower) many years ago. I think the pod parent was Roses in Snow or Cherry Pie. Sandy is one of two gardeners who kindly shared/traded some of her seeds and got me hooked on Daylilies. Now I have Daylilies everywhere! I have between 300 - 400 daylily plants growing around my yard. Every single one was grown from seeds. LOL! So I am not kidding when I suggest that gardeners can REALLY add lots of daylilies around their yard by growing hybrids from seeds. I like to cross-pollinate my daylily blooms to see what cool new hybrid I can create, too! Can you tell I have a thing for hybrids and growing plants from seeds?!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us. Becky, this is a great repeat article and I enjoyed reading it again! ![]() ~ I'm an old gal who still loves playing in the dirt! ~ Playing in the dirt is my therapy ... and I'm in therapy a lot! |

Thanks, Lin! I had no idea it was going to be repeated again. ![]() ![]() Perhaps others who didn't see it before, have the opportunity to read it now. I am getting ready to sow some of this year's collected seeds and will be using this same method. I haven't changed the method at all except for the markers I am using. I've had such good success with germinating seeds this way! There are many ways to germinate and grow seeds ... my way is just one way of many!!! Well I'm one of those that didn't see it the first time and I'm very glad it ran again. I am into wildflowers and native plants so I rarely pay much attention articles and weeks dedicated to cultivated plants. But this article and Daylily week has sparked my interest in growing Daylilies. I had a few no names that I got from my mom years ago, but now I think I will start growing them again and playing around with hybridizing. wildflowersoftexas.com |

Jay - I love hybridizing daylilies. When bloom season arrives, I want to call in sick from work every day! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It is really easy to grow daylilies from seeds and if you go check out some of the threads on the Daylily Forum, please check out the monthly seedling threads especially: The thread "July, 2015 seedlings" in Daylilies forum The thread "June 2015 Seedling Blooms" in Daylilies forum The thread "May Seedling Blooms" in Daylilies forum There is a reason that the Daylily Forum is one of the busiest forums here on ATP. What's not to love about daylilies? They are wonderful ornamental plants with amazing blooms! But .... I will warn you now .... it can become an obsession!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us. Becky are you going post a follow up article on how to hybridize? Or maybe I missed it. ©by Gigi Plumeria "Gardening is my favorite past time. I grow whatever plant that catches my attention." Plumeria Photos http://www.flickr.com/groups/c... plant photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/g... |

Gigi - I have not written any articles on hybridizing daylilies. But some other ATP members have. You might want to read their articles: http://garden.org/ideas/view/m... http://garden.org/ideas/view/L... And there are many more articles here on ATP. Just click on "article" and then type in "daylilies" in the search bar. You'll get a great list of previously published articles. AHS article: http://www.daylilies.org/Whatl... I hope these articles are helpful. And if you are looking for info on how to actually cross a daylily with another, this article might help: http://www.pollinator.com/hand... Very, Very Good article! I didn't think of using H2O2 in that way. Your way of starting seeds sounds so much easier than the way I've done it. I can skip many unnecessary steps now. Thank you for writing this Becky. ![]() No two gardens are the same. No two days are the same in one garden. ~Hugh Johnson |

Joy - Thank you for posting! I've had very good success with this method of growing seeds for several years. I hope that it works for others trying it! And if it eliminates some steps that you had been doing .... all the better! ![]() There are numerous ways to germinate seeds, mine is just one way.
