Would it be possible to include a check box that would allow entry to show where a species falls on the IUCN lists? The options that would need to be included are: Extinct (EX) Extinct in the Wild (EW) Critically Endangered (CR) Endangered (EN) Vulnerable (VU) Near Threatened (NT) Least Concern (LC) Data Deficient (DD) Not Evaluated (NE) Thanks for considering this. |
That sounds like a useful addition. Does there exist anywhere a spreadsheet of plants on this list? If so, I might be able to automatically check off some or all of them. |
I can not, for the life of me, find an easy to look through list, never mind a spreadsheet.... http://www.iucnredlist.org/ |
If you click on the tabs (LC, NT, VU, EN, CR, EW, EX) below the search box, you'll get a list of all organisms in the respective categories. They aren't sorted by Kingdom, just listed out alphabetically by genus. http://www.iucnredlist.org/sea... Can you run your robot against those lists, Dave, looking for matching entries in the Plant Database? |
Saw those lists...did not occur to me that perhaps a bot could be programmed to run through it that way. Great thought Kent! Hope it'll be doable. |

The robot had no trouble at all on this and the work is complete! 4,316 of the plants in the IUCN list didn't exist on ATP and therefore were created. If the admins want me to back that part out, I can easily remove all those newly created plants. Let me know. 18,293 total plants were found in the IUCN list. The breakdown of their status is as follows: 5,102 VU 4,401 LC 3,006 EN 1,957 CR 1,402 DD 856 NT 90 EX 29 EW Some of the plants in the list had a non-standard designation and therefore were ignored. These have all been inserted and the appropriate checkboxes checked off. You can see them through the Search by Characteristics page. http://garden.org/plants/searc... |
One final update: I enhanced the Plant View Page to add a nice graphic for the conservation status of plants if one of the options had been selected. You can see an example on the right on this page: Emburana-de-Cheiro (Amburana cearensis) Look above the thumbnail image. |
This is great! |
Wow. VERY nice work Dave. I never thought such a small suggestion would results in such a nice addition to the site! Thank you very much. |
Thanks Rob, I'm glad you like it, and I'm especially glad that you suggested it. Great idea! ![]() |
Watch for misspelled duplicates. One of the new ones added was Dalea humifosa. It should be D. humifusa, which was already in the database. |
Never mind. Unnecessary post. |
Great feature and display. Evan |
