I just bought a S. virens Mill. (green santolina) to replace S. virens 'Lemon Fizz' which did not overwinter for me. Often a plainer cultivar will be hardier is my thinking. Anyway, I was unable to find S. virens in the database but did locate a green santolina as S. pinnata. Are S. virens and S. pinnata one and the same?

I don't know if S. virens is the same as S. pinnata or not but is this the entry you were looking for?

No, that's the one that died on me. I now have a plain green variety.

The catalogue of life says Santolina virens is a previously accepted name but doesn't list a current name. When I looked at their complete list of Santolina I found this:

Santolina tuberculosa Lam. Species synonym for Santolina virens Mill.

But, S. tuberculosa is not in the ATP database either.

Not "previously" accepted, Lin. It's a provisionally accepted name.

I will just remain confused. Added it to My List as S. virens, but whatever anyone decides to name or rename it is fine with me. I have so much admiration for you folks who actually track down these name changes - thanks for keeping our database up-to-date and accurate!

S. virens is an accepted name for now, Deb. I think "provisionally accepted" means that the genus is being researched further and may require some changes in the near future.

Our database is missing several of the provisionally accepted names of Santolina species, so I'll add those today.

Green Grin! Gee, I can't believe I read that as "previously" ... and the ophthalmologist told me I have 20/20 vision in one eye and 20/25 in the other. Blinking

I have a Santolina from Bluestone Perennials. It is listed as Santolina ericoides. No such thing in our database. But looks similar to the picture under Santolina virens

http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/SAER.html

Do I need to create a new entry in the database?

The Catalogue of Life shows it as a synonym for

Lavender Cotton (Santolina villosa)

so I will add the name to that plant.
