Well, as of yesterday morning, I have not been able to open it either. I suspect they may be making some corrections. We can find out other ways but here is what I do know. The original five developed and named by Dr. Griesbach after his five Granddaughters were: Pearl Stacie (meant to be Pearl Gracie), Pearl Justine (also called Pearl Justien), Pearl Jennifer, Pearl Carolina (meant to be Caroline) and Pearl Jessica. These are the original five that were selected by Peter Groot of Holland. I am of the understanding that all further development work on the Pearl series has been done in Holland. There are now at least two more that been added to the Pearl series: Pearl Lorraine and Pearl Melanie. They are currently propagated and marketed by Hyde. Confusing Note: The Lily Nook lists the hybridizer of Pearl Melanie as (Griesbach). I believe this to be an accidental error/oversight. Seems to me there was a very comprehensive write up on the Pearl series in the not to distant past somewhere but I draw a blank on that right now. I'll send Richard Hyde a note tonight and hopefully he can fill the blank spaces in a hurry. |

Lorn's always on top of it. I was gonna say that the lily nook has Griesbach as the hybridizer but I see it may be wrong. |
Hyde doesn't seem to separate Melanie out from the others ![]() http://www.hwhyde.co.uk/lilies... |
Well anyway, whatever.... now I'm looking around to see what pollen I have to smack on it, or vise versa... ![]() |

And, they also say under Pearl Stacey that it is part of a 'group of six'. Well, there were 'six', that Peter Groot selected, but 'number six' was an O/T named Dr. Griesbach, after himself. http://www.hwhyde.co.uk/lilies... Let's see what kind of message I wake up to in the morning. I think it's 4 AM over there now. |
Thanks for sleuthing, Lorn. On another note, there is nothing like a big gob of Tiger Babies: ![]() |

I've had 10 more lilies bloom since my last post, however, the pics just don't make the cut. I'll try for some good ones tomorrow. Since like 6-7-14 the following have started blooming: Tiny Orange Sensation, Tiny Sensation, Lollipop, Forever Susan, Tiny Padhye, Good Night, Tiger Play, Tiny Icon, Lilium regale, and Green Goddess. Nothing that's been done can ever be changed. |

UPDATE JUNE 14TH, 20014: Richard Hyde informed me that both Pearl Melanie and Pearl Loraine (one 'r') were Registered by 'THE LILY COMPANY' in Holland. As far as he knows, Dr. Griesback did not approve the names. They have Pearl Melanie listed as 'new'. Other bits and pieces from my scrapbook: Peter Groot, who selected the original five Pearls from Dr. Griesbach, sold his Nursery to THE LILY COMPANY in 2009. You can Learn more about THE LILY COMPANY here: http://www.lilycompany.nl/en An interesting letter I had copied from THE SUBURBAN GARDENER from Dr. Griesbach addressed to a person named Lily. I believe this is Lily Gardner, one of our forum members. here. And, ( I just couldn't resist), an old photo I have of Hublein that just caught my eye, the high flyin' jet setter who broke the old Oregon Bulb Farm. ![]() ![]() |

Tiger Babies and Tiny Padhye ![]() So Lorn, it sounds like Melanie is from Griesbach genetics - either bred directly by Griesbach but not selected by Peter at the time of the original 5 or maybe hybridised by Peter Groot from Griesbach stock before he sold to The Lily Company... or by The Lily Company after they acquired the breeding stock from Peter? Though I guess either nursery could have had their own tetraploid stock in parallel with the Griesbach stock, not necessairly interbred. Thanks for digging all that up. I notice Hublien has had his arm torn off - did the lilies fight back? ![]() |
