Can anyone ID this deciduous shrub? Stems are green and leaves have some red veining. Judging from stalks left from last year, it gets to be about 4-5 feet high. ![]() ![]() Thanks for your help! Any flowers to show? |

Not yet. I first thought of amaranthus, but it doesn't fit the photos. Then I checked aralias, to no avail. I'm stumped! Here is my zone 7 garden, it's just begun its growth and I suspect flowering will be mid- to late summer. Thanks. Maybe a ragweed? (Ambrosia) Nothing that's been done can ever be changed. |

I'll take a twig to the local extension office and see if they can ID it for me. Thanks for your suggestions. I think that if ever a mortal heard the voice of God it would be in a garden at the cool of the day. ~F. Frankfort Moore, A Garden of Peace |

Check out goldenrod. Edit: After reading the post by Danita I had a close look at the older leaves and am retracting my suggestion of goldenrod. Sunset Zone 28, AHS Heat Zone 9, USDA zone 8b~"Leaf of Faith" |

The older, larger leaves and dead stalks resemble a perennial Hibiscus. I'm having trouble thinking of which species might have that exact leaf shape, though...perhaps one of the interspecific hybrids. When it blooms it will be easy to tell if it's a Hibiscus or not. |

Danita said:The older, larger leaves and dead stalks resemble a perennial Hibiscus. Ditto. Probably Hibiscus coccineus or closely related.... |

This will give more of an idea of the variability of leaf form on Ambrosia artemisiifolia: https://www.google.ca/search?q... |

@Hemophobic, are you able to post photos of several of the individual leaves so we can get a better look? That might help. Sunset Zone 28, AHS Heat Zone 9, USDA zone 8b~"Leaf of Faith" |

I was at a garden center today and made sure to look at the different Hibiscus leaves. The leaves of the hybrid 'Fireball' looked very similar so I'm thinking your plant is an interspecific hybrid with Hibiscus coccineus in the bloodline. Hopefully it will show some buds soon. ![]() 'Fireball' leaves: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/2... |

Danita: That hibiscus `Fireball' looks a lot like it. I'll try to get a better photo later. Headed out of town today. I think that if ever a mortal heard the voice of God it would be in a garden at the cool of the day. ~F. Frankfort Moore, A Garden of Peace |
