I just found that one of the new plants I just got in July is sending up a bloom stem. I'm wondering if I should let it bloom, or if it's best to cut it off so the plant will use it's energy to build a strong root system. Any suggestions?

Me personally, I keep the scape and let them bloom. For one I want to make sure it is the correct plant. I have gotten plants that are not correct and if I would have cut the scape I would have known that until the next year. Second, I hybridize so I'm wanting to get the pollen to use/save.

What a lot of people do is let it bloom at least once or twice to make sure the plant is the correct one and then cut it off.

Now I have a second new one sending up a bloom. I get to see them now instead of next summer! I have not had that happen before.

OK, I'm up to 5 of my new plants having blooms stalks. Most of my other ones are finished blooming, so I guess I get a late show.

Now I have 8 of the 15 new DL's from Marriots that are going to bloom this fall. I've never had that happen before. It's kind of nice to get to see them before next spring. Smiling

The three that have bloomed so far have had full sized blooms too. I was expecting some kind of smaller less developed blooms.

Let it bloom, but remember, the blooms you get on a newly planted cultivar will often be a pale shadow of their proper self. They should look like normal next season.

We want to see pictures Tom.
