Peonies forum: How late can I replant peonies?

They are dug, but rather than mail them to my sister who lives in Detroit, I am thinking of bringing them along on a plane Nov 5. To late for her to plant?

Will her soil be frozen by then?
Maybe she will need to get her tea kettle out and thaw the soil?
We could still plant in November most years here.

I agree with Caroline! I'd suggest that you have her did the hole now and put the soil to backfill in the garage or somewhere it won't freeze. You shouldn't have any problems planting that late but make super sure you don't leave any air gaps when you plant.

LizinElizabeth's suggestion is the safest, but assuming the ground is not frozen, and I would be very surprised if it was, you will be fine planting then. You can plant them right up until the ground freezes.
