I love the Bordered Patch, I just raised and released a big cluster of them like the one you showed Linda, I found them or Cowpen daisy.
They reach maturity very fast and they are a lot of fun, they are so beautiful Smiling

Those little ones are still out on the plant, Josephine. It's fascinating to watch them all clustered together and after they've skeletonized a leaf, a couple will finally head down the stem to look for more, then the others follow. If they find a little bitty leaf, they have to split up, some eating that leaf, the others heading to another...there being literally not enough room for all of them on the small leaves.

Linda....your BP pic is beautiful!
As for the wee cats...could they be the Silvery-Checkerspot? I raised a few of these one year.

You're lucky, Sheila! I've never gotten those cats to raise. I do think it's Bordered Patch, because the BP butterflies are already here. Didn't know there were those others that turn up on sunflower plants...good to know!
There's some other cats now...on Red Hopi Amaranth. I've never noticed cats on that before. Maybe a hairstreak or something like that?

Westerny Pygmy Blues uses some amaratha species. But those caterpillars are really really reeeeeeeeealy small. Is that caterpillar smaller than a hairstreak caterpillar would normally be?

Gray Hairstreaks will eat just about anything :o)

Common Sootywings and Mazan's Scallopwing skippers do too but that ain't a skipper caterpillar!

You know you're going to have to raise and release it and let us know :o)

~ Cat

ps...there is a passionvine beetle larval that looks very much like a hairstreak caterpillar but the ones I've seen are usually pink.

Well, after looking at pics of the Gray Hairstreak cat, I'm thinking it's probably not that, this doesn't look as hairly as that kind seems to be. The cats are pretty small, a bit over 1/4 inch. Yeah, I'm raising some...one of them I brought in already started pupating, so hopefully I'll see the butterfly sometime!

Well, I found my loupe and tried to get a better look at those little bitty cats...and I don't think they are butterfly cats...darn! Looked similar to some, but they have these legs that look like sawflies or something, even though they don't have that sawfly "look".

I've never seen that one, Cat! The buckeye I raised emerged today. By the time I got home, it was really hyper...couldn't get a pic, it flew away!

I found this cat today...caught my eye when I stopped on a local road. It was clinging to a frogfruit stem, no sign of any host plant nearby so I brought it home. It has been eating pipevine leaves since it got here...poor thing! Well, I haven't had any of those cats this year...should have enough food for it!

One of the two Giant Swallowtails that I released today. A Two-tailed Tiger emerged also, but I didn't get a pic. A bunch of other tigers have been flying around outdoors since the Hermine storms.

Gotta love those sneaky mothers. Am always amazed at how I say I've looked over my plants for eggs or early instars and find nothing then a couple of days later...voila! Caterpillars!

Well, actually I found 4 of them when still eggs (but didn't know whether they were Queen or Monarch). And the 5th cat I found today was already hatched. I found a second buckeye cat today also. The agalinis plants are so numerous out there this year that lots of cats could be raised on them!

Linda...were you one of the butterflies that bought one of those hand held microscope cameras? Am still wanting to get one to play with but haven't figured out which to get.

Anyone have one that wants to comment on them?

Cat, actually, it broke before I got good at using it...my kitties are sometimes good at knocking things off of where I put them around here. I might be able to fix it one of these days
One of my Stinging Nettle is being used again...probably by RA cats like before.
Thumb of 2010-09-27/LindaTX8/b2d7ea
One of the two buckeye cats I have pupated. With the really amazing number of agalinis plants this year, you'd think that there would be more cats showing up...but I haven't seen more cats or even the butterflies lately!

One of the 3 latest buckeye cats...found when I was looking for food for the other cats. The Agalinis is mostly seeding out...still some flowers left, but fewer every day.
