Happy Groundhog Day...six more weeks of winter. The January Daylily Alphabet was a bright spot of color for all of us with the many beautiful images of our daylilies posted to the threads. For February I thought maybe we could take a look at and discuss the different terms associated with daylilies......our experiences, questions, definitions, additional information, images, etc.
One place to find terms is The AHS Dictionary of Daylily Terms. There are 13 "A" terms listed relating to daylilies
http://www.daylilies.org/ahs_dictionary/dictionary.html

I found images of Anthers in my files ....

Most daylily blooms have 6 anthers. They are located at the tip of the stamens. Stamens have two parts, the long stem is called the filament and at the end of the filament is the anther with 2 pollen sacs containing the pollen.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/Char/502862

Early in the morning the anthers are closed....
Thumb of 2015-02-02/Char/004881

As the day warms the two pollen sacs begin to open and the pollen dries and gets fluffy....
Thumb of 2015-02-02/Char/85f49c

A fully open anther ....
Thumb of 2015-02-02/Char/c19e38

For hybridizing the entire stamen can be picked and the filament used as a handle... for dabbing the pollen when making crosses.....and for carrying the all important pollen from flower to flower when stuck between the lips or teeth of the hybridizer. I sometimes will have 3 or 4 carried this way...sorry no images Hilarious!

More "A's" I think of are...

ALFALFA pellets, the daylilies and worms love them!

APPLIQUES, a few of my favorites...

I don't have any pictures of "A's", but I think this will be an interesting thread. I love the anther pics Thumbs up

While looking at the terms on the AHS site, I looked up AMERICAN HEMEROCALLIS SOCIETY (AHS) and was surprised to see that it is... "The organization designated by the Royal Horticulture Society for registering clones of the genus Hemerocallis - (daylilies)". I didn't realize this.

I don't know how that got in there but it's not correct. It should be the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), not the RHS.

Edited to add, it has now been fixed. Well spotted, Vickie!

Sue, It wouldn't surprise me if that error goes back to the original data first added to the website by Tim and George Lawrence many years ago. No one has mentioned it until today. I have already sent the correction to Tim and ( although I haven't checked) he let me know almost immediately that the correction has been made. Thanks for the catch!

Julie, I'm surprised none of us noticed it before! I told Tim about it as soon as I saw Vickie's post, and he told me he made the change - I did check and had to refresh the page to see it, but yes indeed it is fixed. I helped with some of the DD entries way back in the original days, mostly the pest and disease entries and a few to do with botany etc., but never noticed that error.

Have you seen Rich Howards new applique intro Malala?

Another cool pattern that I thought of and fits "A" is the Avante Garde. Dan Hansen had a line and introduced several. I don't know where the term originated from for the pattern, maybe with Steve Moldovan's Avante Garde which has the pattern.

Well I was just down in the garden the other day and found thousands of "A's" all over my daylilies, yes Aphids!
It is that time of year here and they were deep down inside the leaves, I keep a small spray bottle of diluted ammonia handy and sprayed them with that, the next day the daylilies looked much cleaner.

What's the formula Larry @Seedfork? I just found aphids today on one that has kept green foliage all winter and I haven't decided how to deal with them yet.

I have a bottle that I fill up regularly, so up to the mark with water, then the rest with ammonia. So, that is not much help, but I started using it on my hostas for slugs, and the best I recall there was a very wide variance in the ratios recommended. so by trial and error I experimented until I got about a weak of a solution that seemed effective, somewhere around 12 parts water to 1 part ammonia would be close.

In addition to doing a rust purge, I am battling the "A"s (aphids), too. Glare I just saw them today; about 3 plants were totally infested. Since I had a spray bottle of Dawn solution handy, I tried that. (I think someone else on this forum has used it on aphids before...)

Any type of dish soap will work on Aphids. Just like insecticidal soap. If it's not a huge infestation just squishing them works with the added benefit of being satisfying revenge. Sticking tongue out
