Pushing the Zone in Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska, has a pretty short growing season, which is cool (55-65 F) and tends to be overcast much of the time. So, having a greenhouse would be great. Not having enough room for one on my urban lot, I fortunately discovered raised beds, and to extend the season, hoop beds. Hope you will enjoy my journey into new gardening worlds.

Mary - To look at your growing season photos, I'd have never guessed you lived in Alaska! What you have done is amazing and inspiring! I am a fan of raised beds as well. I have the opposite issue as my yard is sandy and often dry & hot with a long growing season (using the right plants of course!). Always fun to figure out what grows well in a particular area. Congrats on your apple tree!

I wish I had room for more trees but the back yard is full and the front yard would only feed moose. Sad

Ha Mike. How will you have time for a raised bed vegie garden when you have all those gorgeous daylilies plus seedlings plus plus Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing But Thanks anyway.

That was sort of what I figured, Holly. Flowers are nice but I wanted to grow fresh vegies and move closer to an organic garden in general. I even volunteer at the local botanical garden (as office help) and am looking forward to this summer's workshops.

Great. They have done a wonderful job on it. Lots of interesting hardscape in addition to plants everywhere.
