Thank you everyone for the thumbs up and for the acorns. This was a fun article. PlantSister and I worked on this a long time and hope everyone will try to grown the African Horned Melon.
I received my original seeds from my friend PlantSister but the seeds are available from places like Baker Creek, Seed Savers Exchange and other places; they may be offered as "Kiwano Melons" or "Jelly Melon".
If anyone wants to try to grow African Horned Melons I have seeds available. If you can grow a cucumber you can grow these; very easy plant to grow, just give it some support so it can climb. I have not yet made the tea as I learned about that too late (already chucked the peels in the compost bin) but will made the tea this year.
Oh, the taste? It is a complicated taste. You know how difficult it is to describe the taste of Kiwi fruit? Well, the Horned Melon is like that - not to say it tastes like a Kiwi, only that it is difficult to describe. To some people it tastes like a combination of bananas, melon, lime, and cucumber. I just like it because it is so
green.
