Tom ~ I have a question. When do you decide which seedlings are culls? After they bloom...the second or third year? Do you ever pick out the "runts" before you even see them bloom?

I have noticed on the same cross, some with really large leaves and others look like I just planted them from their group in the communal pot. This is their third year. Most have not bloomed yet. I am thinking of planting out just the biggest ones first. What are your priorities? Do you give them all an equal chance?

Actually I would keep all sizes. Since all seeds from the same pod have the same parents, if you look up the parentage of each you will find SDBI or IB blood in many. That would explain the dispersion in leaf size. The other question to consider is about increases and clump thickness or form. Usually all these questions can only be answered after a three year blooming sequence in open ground. Then you can ascertain which are worthy of keeping, which are just mehs and which are to be discarded. All crosses will follow (at least in theory) the bell shaped probability function: 66% will cluster around the mean/average of both parents and 33% will spread out at each end in relation of each character that is being appraised. Some characters may be linked with each other, in that case their distribution will still follow the bell function but clumped together. Of course you may decide to cull out any below maximum size. That would be the case if you were searching for TBI's only....a lovely SDBI that could be an award winner could go thus into the compost heap... Green Grin! In my case, I would wait those darn three years until I decide...I couldn't do otherwise...but each of us is different so finally the decision is up to oneself.... Hilarious!

If space is available, I wait them out to bloom, but if they are that wimpy of a grower, they really have to be something special when they bloom. And even then if they continue to be wimpy growers I'd probably discard them. Or one could transplant them to a different location and see if they grow better there, or maybe send them to a different climate and see it they thrive there. I do have a couple that have been wimping along a while now, but I think they better bloom next year or they are on their way out.

I wore myself out weeding and watering today, but I discovered this little guy braving the heat:

June rebloom of Autumn Jester:

Thumb of 2021-06-19/lauriemorningglory/421760

I should have waited a little longer to take the picture--it opened up beautifully. Smiling I have pictures of Autumn Jester's first blooms dated April 12. I wonder how many more reblooms it will have?

It was too hot out there to do anything outside, so instead I put the citrus reamer on the food processor and juiced 8 Valencia oranges. Then I made a pineapple upside down cake.

We will have fresh orange juice with the Father's Day brunch I'll be fixing tomorrow, and later the cake with whipped cream.- my husband's favorite.

Son-in-law took down a couple small birch trees. He used an electric saw that my husband had acquired. Trouble missing the telephone wires to the house.
. Daughters weeded as I indicated what plants were. Lovely day with soft breeze & absent mosquitos (although they were present this evening.)

Oh Robin, how awful. Crying I hope you can find another Etna to replace it.

I suggest installing a few motion sensor lights around your home if you ever come across stolen plants at night again.

Thankyou Ian. That is something I intend to do.

We had an amazing cool day yesterday, so I dug some more culled seedlings and hand spaded the area trying to remove all the quack grass rhizomes. What a task that was. I still have many more to dig up. I have made a long list of those that need dividing, our club is having our annual July Iris sale again this year, so I have a home for them. I had way too many seed pods take this year, so I have to decide if I'm planting them all, just a few of each, or what I'll do with all of them. So far I haven't gone off the edge ordering too many new ones, YET. Of course the Mid-America sale hasn't started yet either. Rolling my eyes. I did order a few peonies though.

Not much happening here iris-wise, but I did finish making beds and planting out in the veggie garden. Hurray! There is still room for many more beds, but that will take some effort due to a pretty bad infestation of quack grass and perennial thistles - so I can sympathise with your quack grass crusade Tom. Rolling my eyes.
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

We were not in the garden as my dear husband, John, died on June 13 & yesterday was a 4 hour drive to his family plot in NY state. The Drs were expecting it & sent him home from the hospital (in hospice care) in Feb. In daffodil season, he said that he had a drive that the plants had died, so picked several & made an arrangement to cheer him up. His nephew came from New Mexico & our 3 daughters have been here from different place plus one teen age niece. She is practicing Spanish so on the 4 hr drive home from the cemetery, she cheered us up by reading 'Harry Potter' in Spanish to cheer us up. She is working on pronunciation.
