We used to grow Buttercup Bower before we moved here 40 years ago. I was very fond of it. I bought some historic median last year & worried about them all winter.

Love them all. I have very few, but have ordered some more (and older ones than these too).

Most everything here have been MDB's, or SDB's, so far....but Elizabeth Huntington opened today (aka "crepe paper iris', or "Blue Zua")

I have heard this one called Iris Germanica and other names. I think someone queried this before. It is much prettier than this picture and about 26" tall max although some much shorter. I know it is historic. I have been trying to ID it.

Arlyn, I have seen pictures of the crepe paper iris, but are the falls really soft and thin like crepe paper or are they stiffer?

It appears to be Iris Germanica, named by Linneaus in 1753. Mine also is about 26-27" with leaves about 15-17", fairly early, but of yellow on beard in throat. See http://www.missouriplants.com/... for good write-up on it. My colors below are not as dark as the real thing.

Arlyn, do you grow 'Cherie'? It's very crepe papery for me this year.. In last year's pictures, it doesn't seem as pronounced.

They seem pretty 'soft " to me ,Leslie....so 'substance wise', I'd say they feel 'crepe papery" .

I do grow Cherie, sherry, but it was planted last year, so as yet, I haven't seen a bloom....I'll be sure to check on it !

I actuall was "supposed" to have both Zua, AND Elizabeth Huntington.....but they BOTH turnrd out to be "EH"....so I'll have to hunt for Zua for next year ! I wanted both, for my 'sport" bed.

These are the historics I have the most of, mostly because they are very good growers, and have been in the ground here for decades.

Thanks, Dave from PA, for the good reference that perfectly matches my Iris Germanica flower. It is the first to bloom for me and it keeps increasing. Can't believe it is that old - wow! If you love historics, it is one to have as it heralds the blooming season every year.
