I saw this one at the nature center high up in the tree...not the best pic...I couldn't get close and didn't have my telephoto lens with me...it's cropped quite a bit.

Looks like a very tattered and worn Mourning Cloak - Nymphalis antiopa
One of the butterflies that can (and do) overwinter as adults so this one has likely done that and is a little worse for ware.... (and no not a moth, despite the drab appearance)
If we had no holes in our leaves we would have no butterflies!
