Our local HD had a lot of 5g "Red Iceberg" roses today.
Hmmmmmmmm.."Red Iceberg" ??? (I think someone posted about this a while back ?)

Looking at them I was convinced they are actually La Sevillana (or "Sevillana" )
Anyway, I had to return to the store a few hours later. Before I went back there I stopped at home and picked a stem of my La Sevillana and took it with me to compare it to what they are calling "Red Iceberg".
Sure enough, they match.
How can growers sell roses with fraudulent names like that ?

And aside from the ethics of this type of renaming, what kind of grisly name is Red Iceberg? It sounds like an iceberg got covered in blood after something ran into it.

Surprising that they bothered to print a label with the wrong name. Stores have lots of plants with no labels.

I agree with zuzu. Red Iceberg is a grisly name. They would do better with Strawberry Sorbet, Cherry Ice Pop or something appealing.

Ironically, I would be more likely to buy the rose labeled as Meidiland's Servillana hardy to zone 5 if the plant was clearly grown on its own roots. I am looking for pretty, hardy own root floribundas or shrub roses. So is my neighbor, he caught the rose and the daylily crazies from me.

They are trying to rebrand roses. They should just mark the breeder and registration name. People are already looking for Austin, Kordes, Meidiland ...

Yes, Toni! That's exactly the kind of creepy thing I picture when I hear the name "Red Iceberg." It's an unfortunate choice of words.

It's simply marketing. Imagine visiting your local big box store and finding "Red Lady Banks". The ONLY resemblance to Banksiae is that it climbs. The rose actually provided under that name is Red Ribbons.

The "Red Iceberg" roses sold at the Los Angeles Lowe's was Red Simplicity. http://www.helpmefind.com/gard...

That kind of "marketing" has been used for many years. Have you ever encountered "Banksiae Snowflake" in nurseries and big box stores? It's Fortuniana. Monrovia Nurseries has practiced it for decades. Look at their tags and in their catalog on line. They have frequently renamed existing named cultivars so when you look for the plant by their name, you only find it in their signature green nursery cans. But, you can also frequently find it for significantly lower prices under the original cultivar name. QVC and other online and television retail sources have been re naming roses and other plants. All of their branded mini roses are already existing named minis, but under their names, they are "exclusives". That kind of marketing has been going on forever. When foreign roses are introduced in to other markets, they frequently are given names more specific to that market. Meilland renamed many Moore minis for the European market. Rise'n'Shine became "Golden Sunblaze". There are many examples to be found.

PP ....

They have been re-naming roses for centuries ! That's why so many ogrs have multiple names.

What I hate is when the tag says "Red rose" or "Yellow rose" ... Grumbling
I'd rather weed than dust ... the weeds stay gone longer.
