But ... if a daylily is featured each day, that might encourage those who have it to go back into the database to answer the additional questions that will be added from this thread discussion.

"..there isn't a set way of determining fragrance." That was exactly my point.

What is fragrant to you, to my neighbor, or to a hybridizer in England may not be fragrant the person who is filling out the form.

True, very true. I think most people can gauge it with some accuracy though, don't you think? Smiling

Dave - I did not think about people doing searches in the Daylily Database when thinking this information should be put in the Comments section. It is a shame that the comments do not show up in searches in some way. It would be nice if the person searching could check a box to include comments in search or something like that. Not changing the registration information and having this info collected from ATP members in it's own section sounds like the best way to go. Thumbs up

Yay! I'm glad you agree. Hurray!
Maybe the thread was confusing previously? Shrug! I know it's really long and hard to follow at this point without cutting 3 hours out of a busy day just to read all of the posts. This is what we've been trying for, though, and why we're all commenting feverishly on this thread. Big Grin

daylily said:
What I usually tell people new into daylilies is not to buy anything you have not seen growing near you.

Agreed. I think this is sage advice. Although, I have purchased some online that are simply grown in the same growing zone. I have also purchased a few that had sentimental value. Rolling my eyes. Perhaps I'll be the person in my area that grows it successfully in this area and 'prove' it hardy here. Smiling I guess someone has to be the first. But, generally speaking, I think what you said is very important--buy what's already grown locally and view it first. (This was especially important when I purchased my near-whites. )

A "daily" daylily cultivar featured would certainly get through the 80,000 daylilies faster than a "weekly" daylily. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I like the idea of just implementing the additional questions that everyone here thinks would be a good starting point (I'll say it again .... I like what Jon proposed) and then more questions or tweaking can be added as needed.

Dogs….

I think you read something into what I wrote. I wasn't thinking of you at all when I wrote what I did about fragrance. I was only trying to give an example of two different growers of daylilies. One that might be registering and checking off fragrant or not on the registration form, and another example of a person coming to ATP and participating in the form. I could have said someone who has grown daylilies 20 years. Two different perspectives. I was not talking about any real person. I am sorry that you took my words in a different way than I intended. My grammar and writing is not the best, and it is difficult for me to write in a way that I think I will be understood.

Becky - I really didn't realize … Seeing that you live in Florida, I "assumed" there would be lots of Display Gardens and such around you. You really do have to rely on others.

I misspoke. Daily it is. Start a new thread about it, though.

dave said:The "daylily of the week" idea is a good one, but this thread is about the bud and branch stuff. I suggest you start a new thread focused on that topic. I like the idea, btw, and will be glad to set something up.

Hehe, isn't that what started this thread, though? Rolling my eyes. Big Grin Maybe I'm missing what Becky is saying, but I think she's just vouching for the idea that we take a poll to determine what cultivars to feature first, use that to do a "Bud and Branch Update Day" (which would, in reality, be more than just bud/branching info. at this point), and we can use that to stoke the fires of enthusiasm and participation for those cultivars.

...or maybe I misunderstood what you were saying, Dave? Shrug! Were you asking her to actually get it started? That would be great, if so! Hurray! So we're decided on doing our Bud and Branching Update (BABU) day via requests first, then other cultivars by some other means when we run out?

By the way, I had a thought! I really think Larry hit the nail on the head by suggesting that we take what's most requested on user wishlists, starting with the "Must Have"s...that way people who aren't active in threads still get information they want on the cultivars they have marked that they have an interest in. A few additional thoughts while going down that road...

@dave
* Would it be difficult to set up pings (or some sort of system note) to let users know that information has been updated on their favorite cultivars? (Not for pictures, just actual database information.)
* Is there a relatively easy way to set things up like they do on Amazon where they have a section for questions and people who have the product (daylily) can respond directly to the questions?

Many of the daylilies on the wish list are just that. Some of these cultivars are very new and very expensive, so most folks don't own them and are waiting for the price to come down. You might not get a lot of response.

I will start a thread today, "Daylily Cultivar Poll". It's "featuring" a daylily that likely many folks may already have and think it is worth creating an exclusive thread for.

I think for input you're looking mainly at pre-1995 daylilies, as I alluded to earlier in the thread. Of daylilies registered since 1995, 75% already have bud count and branching given in the AHS database. If you bump that up to more recently, then 85% of daylilies registered since 2005 have bud count and branching given already. So you're not really looking for many of the latest and greatest and most expensive for this.

It looks, from my AHS database search, that the AHS started the option of including bud count and branching around 1990 because if you search for daylilies with bud count and/or branching before 1990 there are no results.

Ah ha, I misunderstood that.

Okay in that case, it would make sense to wait until this feature is ready, and then start with the daily thread?

I went ahead and started the cultivar "poll" just to get a list started of daylilies that could be featured daily.

I didn't see this because editing a post does not trigger a system message notification. Next time, just add a new post rather than editing an existing one, to prevent the additional content from being missed.

These are both good ideas but not something that we can do right away. They'd require quite some programming but I agree that they would both be very useful!

I have just posted the initial stage of our local report feature.

Since this affects everyone, I posted the full announcement here:

The thread "Announcing Local Reports!" in Plant Database forum

I would be very grateful if some of you would give it a test drive and see how you like it. As always, the form is not set in stone and I am very happy to refine it over time.

Thanks Becky. Smiling

And BTW, "Plant Files" is a name that is owned by a different website. They own that name and we don't use it here. Smiling

I added a new thread to announce this new feature. I sure hope everyone finds a little time to report their own experiences with various daylily cultivars and other plant species! What a great feature!

I just discovered, though, that quoting someone who has used the @ re-notifies the same people the @ was directed at in the original post. I just responded to an @ to me and Maurice and the system sent me a notification that I'd mentioned myself Hilarious! Maurice was also notifed, again. Sorry Maurice if you're reading this.

I just found this thread today, and I wanted to say thank you. I think this is a great idea, and while it may be subjective, having all this data in one place will be extremely helpful once it has accumulated. Perhaps a bell curve type display could be used to show the data? Just a thought. I will make time to give input, fill out forms, and whatever I can to help you guys in this venture. It's quite a massive undertaking, but you have to start somewhere. Thumbs up
