This plant appears to be from the holly family and grows wild in the High Sierras. It does not look to me like a poison oak/ivy type but my grandson has hives all over after playing near/in it and also a fever. Anybody know this one?

At any rate, people can have allergic reactions to Barberry

I certainly hope your grandson gets well very soon. Please make sure he sees a doctor since he is having fever from this. Allergies can have a way of escalating over time & it's possible that in future he could become anaphylactic to this plant or family of plants so that should be watched very closely.

Thanks Ann for your prompt reply and concern. I passed it on to my daughter who sought medical help right away. The boy is much better today. George

That is great news to hear George. I'm sure he will be back to his usual self in no time considering how resilient kids are. Thumbs up

This looks more like Live Oak. That being said the Sierra is chock full of Poison Oak. No telling what his reaction is from without testing. I get bitten by nosee-ums up there and have large hives at every bite.
