In this Daylily Hybridizing article that was posted a couple of days ago

After a bit it dries and seals off the end of the stile. Once the tip is sealed it won't accept any more pollen. You need to have your chosen pollen in place before the tip is sealed."
This info is about Daylilies but, I would guess that it would be similar for other plants as well.
