Last fall I bought 6 amaryllis bulbs to grow for the holiday season -- one of them never did flower, although it had excellent leaf growth. Once the weather got warm enough I stuck all six of the plants out in the GH and have been watering them right along but apparently not paying much attention to them otherwise -- I have no idea how I didn't notice a flower stalk growing until now, but it's just about ready to open a flower! I'll add a photo once it does... Smiling

It would be pretty awesome if they would bloom twice a year -- I've actually never gotten one to rebloom even once...

I've had a few bloom twice in a year but that hasn't happened in quite some time. Maybe they need more food.

Mine are year-round in the garden and have surprised me some years with two blooming periods (late spring and autumn), but I don't have the answer why they do this. I don't know if I will have any flowers this coming spring, since hungry rodents (because of the draught) have eaten them badly.

My favourite is the white with red stripes. My dad brought some bulbs hidden in the sleeve of his jacket (went through Customs' with the jacket over his arm) when he returned from visiting my mother's youngest sister and fam. in Florida some ... 20 years ago. They have reproduced happily since then.

Thanks, Arlene and Sandy. I have really enjoyed growing these rewarding bulbs. I have shared my Aunt's Hipperastrum with many people and keep doing so. The others are newer acquisitions and although they have reproduced, I have shared only a few so far.

My aunt met my uncle in Berlin, during the occupation. Uncle Bob was an USA airforce colonel who first befriended my grandfather when he saw him ... gardening! The 2 aunts that remained in Germany during WWII were hidden in a cellar because of the bad behaviour of the russian soldiers. After a few visits to my grandparents, uncle Bob heard strange noises and was afraid it could be an ambush. Well, he married the youngest sister and took her with him to the USA. I met him when I was 7 years old and he was a wonderful man/uncle.

Yes, Arlene, especially because they stayed married and had 3 children. One of the girls followed her dad's carrer.

Sandy, do you think your Royal Velvet is the same as my pure red one? I'm asking, since here they are sold without names.

The first one posted, was sent to me as a tiny bulb (long ago, DG exchange) labeled as Vodoo.

Ursula, I'm pretty sure I am the last one to ask about amaryllis varieties... I normally manage to kill them off as soon as they quit flowering around the Christmas holidays Sad And as far as the variety name, only know this one because that's what the label (that I still have) says. Shrug!

Sorry I can't be of more help! Smiling
