So there are several of these trees located around my yard and I've never given them much thought. Until today when I purchased a plant at the garden center I work at and I noticed it had several smaller versions of this tree around the plant. I planted the plant I purchased and put the trees in the empty pot with some soil. Some family members believe it is part of the birch family?

It reminds me of River Birch (Betula nigra)

Possibly, but the leaves on the saplings I have are more heart shaped?
