This is like a hedge almost. Birds are ignoring it for now but I saw a chipmunk filling his cheeks with it. Very thorny.

It's a pretty common plant over most of Minnesota, and grows farther north than you think:

Of course, for Canada, the map only shows that it grows in some places in Ontario and Quebec, and not likely the whole of the provinces.
