It was a rain snow mix which has not hung around.
Got to 3ºC or 34 º F today.
I wonder how the brief cold spell will affect the sweet potatoes.

Eeeeewww!!! Having to think about that four letter word starting again is a bummer!! I thought our 43F morning a couple days ago was bad so I think I would have cried if we'd gotten snow, even in a rain mix. I don't know if it will hurt you sweet potatoes 'cuz I've never grown them but I did start moving my succulents in and have started taking cuttings from things I want to keep over. We've had a lot of cooler weather this summer and I'm afraid we might be in for it again this winter.

Oh no!! We had a low of 48F last night and I thought that was bad enough.

A brief cold spell might have benefits as it might trick some plants into thinking winter is coming, and they need to get on with their job of throwing seeds etc?
Sweet potatoes are not supposed to be exposed to temperatures under 10ºC or 50 ºF , but maybe a brief exposure will trick them into bulking up the roots? I don't know , but will see.
It could have killed them too?

Caroline, how do the sweet potato vines look? I've only tried growing them one time, and I think that was the coldest summer we've ever had here, so naturally they didn't do squat for me.

No frost or snow here yet, but I can definitely feel the weather starting to change -- the humidity is lower, the winds are cooler, the days are getting shorter. We probably should be used to it, right? Rolling my eyes.

The Sweet potato plants were drooping this morning, but seem to have come back this afternoon. Growing them as a learning experience this year, and do not expect great results.
Thunbergia was wilting also, but I think it will survive.
There was no frost here---just lower temperatures.

Calgary has had a pretty bad time with snow this past year - I don't envy you. I'm in Peterborough, ON. My potato plants are doing well this year - I find them wilting by the end of the day but we've had some really warm weather in Aug. and early Sept., a bit of water and they recovered. A couple of years ago, my dark vine had the most wonderful pink flowers.

One of this year's vines:

They said on the news the other day we are in for a very mild Fall and Winter. I can live with that.

Frost, yesterday, blackened the sweet potato vines so I dug one pot out to see if there were any sweet potatoes---NO! They probably needed another month to grow.

It hit 27F last night. Goodbye dahlias and a lot of other things. In two weeks I will be digging dahlia tubers. Just received a box from Adelman's with 15 peonies that have to be put out. Thankfully I won't be digging the holes. They are going to the local botanical garden. Absolutely gorgeous tubers. All of them without exception. And many really larger than I have ever seen. We are experimenting at ABG (Alaska Botanical Garden) with three tree peonies. They have never grown trees peonies there but I think they will do okay provided they are placed in good sun. I have told them that they have a few that need to be moved due to bad drainage, poor planting or bad position to get max sun. We'll see.

Mary:- - I hope that when those peonies finally bloom, that you will take pictures.
Sounds like good growing weather in Kamloops, Margaret.
I am busy planting bulbs and a few peony roots.

Not really Caroline, just about everything looks crappy and is shutting down for the winter, a few of the hardier plants continue to bloom, and some of the potted plants on the patio.

It is clear, crisp and 27 this morning. Good thing those peonies are going in on Monday. I harvested potatoes, kale, rhubarb, a few beans and a little lettuce. That is it for this summer. I will be planting garlic and lettuce as soon as I can clean up the raised beds. If our weather warms up (as it does in the fall usually - up down) the lettuce should get a bit of a start. Will cover with poly. It should start early in the spring to grow.

Been cool here in the Pocono Mtns, PA. Mid forties at night and in the mornings. Days are lovely though - High 60's. It's been very dry for weeks. We really need rain Sad

I know frost is right around the corner here... but so far, so good. Still have lots of tomatoes coming along, so I hope it can hold off for a little while!

We had several sub 20's nights with lots of frost. Everything is now dead as a door nail. Then it warmed up to in the 40's at night. Figured it would. Hopes it stops raining and we get some nice 40+ days so I can clean up the garden and dig all the dahlia tubers up. Groan... Sighing!
