Last year I had a few rhizomes of Dykes winner Gypsy Lord left. I had an empty spot in the rose garden and prepared it by adding some alfalfa pellets, well rotted manure and some 10-10-10 fertilizer. I dug a rhizome for a friend this morning and see that the extra attention worked, Look at this beauty....compare to the $5 dollar bill....

You gentlemen are too funny, but that was a very fertile rhizome. I guess I need to go out to my garden and do some careful looking at my rhizomes to see if any of them look sexy.

Gabe - hardest part in your area is finding the farm supply. Southern States carries a bunch of alfalfa and fertilizer but not all available in all areas.

Pretty sure that's the only way they come Gabe -- alfalfa pellets are horse feed (and other critters) -- and they come in 40 lb. bags.

Right! So it would be a mixture, not pure alfalfa.

My grandfather in Omaha was in real estate. When looking at farms, my dad said that he would open the conversation by saying, 'Do you grow much timothy around here'?
