I hadn't noticed the center on 'Starlette'. It's really unique, almost a reverse on the spotting in the center. Cool. Tracey |

Does anybody know if cats eat lilies and if they are poisonous? Thanks, Andy |
Lilies are extremely toxic to cats, causing organ failure. There are a number of toxic plants for cats. The list is here: http://www.aspca.org/Pet-care/... Tracey |

But do cats really eat them? I know lilies and irises are poisonous. My cat loves to come out while I'm gardening. I watched her very closely for awhile to see if she had any inclination at all to chew on the garden plants and she does not. Now if you get a piece of grass she'll chase it around, but she doesn't chew on anything. |

Tracy that looks like just about every plant! Well spider plants aren't listed, she likes to play with that. I have seedlings that have some of Buggy blood in them. I just about gave up on lilies but the winters are sooooooooo long. ;*) |

hmmmmmmmm!-thats the name of my lily thread on DG,..,,.cats can die, even if lily petals go in the drink water, same with daffs,[thats why they are deerproof],.,.my cats are pretty good around the plants, but i do flush the balcony water bucket nightly lily freaks are not geeks! |
I have two cats that will eat anything green. So, my vases are on the wall. My orchids are not poisonous to them and for the most part they leave them alone. My cats are indoor only, which could be part of the problem. I had tried giving them cat grass every so often, but actually found it to be counterproductive. They'd just want more. So I quit. I have my lily seedling room closed off, but when I take them out, the cats all show up. Having been in the Vet ER a few times, apparently lily poisoning is a big issue for cats, especially around Easter (Easter Lilies). There is a sign with a cat and a lily with the dangers of what eating any part of a lily will do to them. Many plants with cause digestive upsets, but lilies can kill them fairly quickly. We have feral cats outside that leave my lilies alone. They eat squirrels, chipmunks, moles...lilies..not really on their to do list. I actually don't notice them eating any plants, not even our wild cat nip. Having had this conversation with a few vets over the years, apparently there are those cats that are plant eaters and those that aren't. There was actually a study being done a few years back too on this very subject. My cat growing up never ate any plants. It was nothing I ever had to worry about. The ones I have now do and I know it, so I am very cautious. Every single part of the lily is poisonous to cats. They pose a clear danger, just be aware of that. Tracey |

Thanks for the insight, Tracey. I thought since my cat wasn't a plant eater, that probably most weren't. I have heard of cats eating plants indoors. My cat is in the garage where my husband has his office, so no plant material there. |
