Lottabeds13: Many things can contribute to the decline of blooms. Are they crowded and maybe could benefit from
dividing? Is the bed no longer getting as much as sun as formerly? Have weeds crept in and are crowding out the DLs?
The list goes on. I've recently had to rescue many of my DLs from an area that was supposed to be kept natural, only
it became TOO natural with weeds, weed trees and other plantings birds added Rolling on the floor laughing Bermuda grass is my biggest
enemy and it had grown in blissful abandon. What a nightmare that was, trying to get the fans cleaned up and rid of
all those BG roots! One of my registered DLs, Dark and Dangerous, just doesn't seem to be very vigorous or prolific.
Some, like Nordic Night, just blast away, so it could be a genetic problem, although if you've had plentiful blooms in
the past and no longer, it has to be growing conditions have changed somehow.

Just my opinion, which with $4.00, will get you a cup of Starbucks coffee! Smiling

Thank you, Angie, I do appreciate your input. I think I need to divide a few of the favorites. Maybe some of them held back because we had a very dry spring. I'll be dividing this weekend, it will give them a boost for next spring. Also, I keep many of my favorites closer to us, in 12 " raised beds, so I will be adding compost and soil amendments. I could not do this stuff in the past spring, because I had hip replacement surgery. This was a snap to recover from, I'm back to work and play, but I had to limit activity during vital garden time (was I nuts to get this done in spring?!? That's another story)
Love hearing about your DL varieties! I am all ears I'm all ears!

Lotta, that was a lot to have going on, so I completely understand.

It seems that this has been a bad year for many garden-wise, not just for daylilies, but many of my daylily club members were
discussing their poor performances this year, some losing plants completely because of the drought. I don't know what your
weather has been like, but we've had very little rainfall since April and hot, hot, hot days. As I said, many things can contribute
to poor performance, so maybe next year will be better. That's always our story, isn't it? And I'm sticking to it!

Angie sounds like you had the opposite weather we had here in Indiana. Record rainfall for months of June and July causing flood damage in some surrounding counties. My daylilys loved it and so did the weeds which got kinda out of control this year.
I have added about 45 new cultivars this year and move many around to make room so the weeds in many places got dug up and pitched.
About 3 or 4 years ago we had a bad drought and i was watering almost every other day. We just had some rain last night and this morning after going for a week w/o it. The weather is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you will get. Kinda stole that from Forrest Gump.

Yes, Kevin. I know all of you in the Midwest got more than your share of rain this summer. Heard on the news Friday
morning that this summer was the hottest one on record, so it's been crazy weather all around. My water bill has been
astronomical, trying to keep my plants alive, and I would love to have some real gentle rain for a few days. So would my
wallet!

Wished I could send some of this rain we've been getting your way! I now have a 1-2' moat around part of my property in the undeveloped lots. And the mosquitoes look big enough to carry you away! Ugh. But my daylily plants seem pretty happy with all the rain.

I like plenty of rain but we had so many rain days the 1st half of summer that drastically cut down on good blooms that were not water logged. I know several times i had to cut the grass the day after rain and the day before the next rain or else it would have been a mess.
I would have gladly traded some to those poor people out west who have to ration water or worse yet watch their homes burn.

I agree Kevin! I live in southern Indiana and we did not get the rain you did the other day, so it has now been at least 6 weeks without rain. However, the temps have been very good. Not at all like the drought of 2012 in our area.

On the topic of daylilies being an addiction, I went to the SWIDS daylily club meeting Thursday night and we had a daylily exchange. No matter how many dl's I have, I always want more!

I came home with It Is Finished, Loving Embrace, and Omega Red.

Sounds like it was a fun meeting, Vickie! Also nice to bring home some goodies, too!

I agree with Kevin that California's fires are just awful. Crying They have those fires year round now. Florida is going to sink into the ocean and California is going to burn to the ground. Hard to believe 30 years ago that was possible.

Becky, did you happen to see the program that the weather channel had on TV about sink holes??? Florida has the most sink holes in the nation. That is really scary.

That is ironic that you brought that up. My husband told me the other day that he heard there was a sink hole that opened up on one of the main roads here locally. My ears perked right up!!! I haven't heard anything else about it. I have heard that most sink holes seem to happen more in the middle of the state and not along the coast. Not sure why. But it is definitely a concern for all Floridians.

This is a news video about a horrible one that happened a couple of years ago and has opened up again! Very, very sad....

Yikes! this conversation has become so interesting, Char....Where can this topic be brought to? Is there another forum that you can recommend? It is not a problem in this area of the country, NY state, but I know some passionate DL growers in sinkhole areas...would like to refer them to this topic.

well if the addiction is serious enough, and the sink hole is large enough, you can start alllll over again planting more dl!

Definitely addicted. I purchased 4 more daylilies (end of season sale) to add to the garden...... Joan Derifield, Windham Luscious Lips, Stargate Portal and Deliverance purchased from NEDS (New England Daylily Society) member.... Really huge plants triple fans. awesome.

You could also start a stand-along thread for Sinkholes in the Sandbox forum. Ask a moderator to split off the posts to a new thread or just use the Quote feature and paste the posts into the new thread.
It’s okay to not know all the answers.
