I found this one along the road in an Atlantic Forest area in Paraty, Brazil.
The leaf margins are entire, it was in bud..

I understand Dave, you might need more clear detailed photos, these captures are not the best I agree..

Did you happen to take any photos of the open flowers?

If this plant was growing along the roadside and not in a botanical garden it could be most anything.
Agave sisalana is one possibility as it has been grown in Brazil for many decades.

No Green, no pics of the open flower, I didn't pass that road again on foot
Agave sisalana is a great suggestion and maybe most likely as it is the only Agave species recorded in the 'Flora do Brasil' as being naturalized in several states, not the Rio de Janeiro state though but in its neighbour state Bahia.
Being on a road side could well have been an escapée..

Thanks for the acorn tip! Hurray!
I was researching and the 'experts' agree that there is some details in the flower which would aid in making a positive identification, and that the flowers point downward in the F. foetida point upward in the A. sisalana.
Guess you will have to grab your camera and make another trip to Brazil. Rolling on the floor laughing Thumbs up

Furcraea foetida has teeth on the lower margins of the leaves, I can't see any on your plant Myriam. I can see what looks like a sharp brown tip on one of the leaves. The flower branches are short on yours and not well branched.

Agave sisalana does look possible, there's a photo of the buds on this link which are maybe more advanced but similar.

More photos, one showing the basal rosette which looks similar, although the leaves are longer..

The second link of Janet did work for me Green Shrug!
Thanks Janet, I think my plant had not the optimal growing conditions with all that competition around it in a limited space. If it had it would have grown in a much more impressive specimen I think..

The second link didn't work for a start, it had a 'html' at the end. I changed it afterwards. nodding

Looking at the Asparagaceae family on Flora do Brasil, there's nothing else it can be other than Agave sisalana.

I agree with you about the growing conditions Myriam.

Agave sisalana has a sharp round brown thorn on the end of the leaf. Furcraea foetida does not.

Aha! That is even an extra confirmation!
I cropped out a couple of brown thorns on the end of the leaf..

I see regularly spaced marginal teeth on the photo above. That is not a character of Agave sisalana.

I'd say with a sharp thorn and marginal teeth on the leaves, you have an Agave. A species can't be determined yet.

Can you show a whole non-flowering plant, as well as pictures of the mature flowers.

The marginal teeth you are seeing I think is another plant behind the Agave. I cropped off a section of the photo to show it better, and enlarged it.

The brown tip is shown in a photo on a link I provided before, and it does match that.

No, that is all I have and the only time I met one.
The toothed leaves are indeed from another plant growing behind it, the place was crowded!
Glad everyone agrees now! Smiling
