My guess was a baby "Dune Sandworm" (science fiction reference).

No, I just found it on my papaya tree and its aggressive. I never seen this type of worm.

I am not Mellie, but insects interest me, so I had to take a peek... It looks to be at least in the Erinnyis genus. It seems to change color with the different instars.

I don't mind picking up insects, but that one might give me pause.

Yup, Greene, looks like you got it. BAMONA reports they are found in Texas and use Papaya as a host plant. Sphinx Moth caterpillars (not worms, FYI) often look scary with their horn on the back and strange eyespots.

OMG, "strange eyespots" seems to me a huge understatement, Melanie! The photo looks like some kind of one-eyed snake... normally it's the spiny/hairy caterpillars that kind of gross me out but this one is even worse. But I do really like the sphinx moths... Smiling
