Welcome!

Welcome to ATP, Inversino!

C'mon, was that photoshopped or real? If real, it sure has bizarre camouflage.

My guess was a baby "Dune Sandworm" (science fiction reference).

Okay, I think I have it...well, I don't have it, just the identification:
Alope sphinx/Erinnyis alope or something pretty darn close.

@mellielong, can you check this please?

Nature sure is amazing with some of the critters that visit our gardens! Could it be the caterpillar of a hawk moth?

I am not Mellie, but insects interest me, so I had to take a peek... It looks to be at least in the Erinnyis genus. It seems to change color with the different instars.

I don't mind picking up insects, but that one might give me pause.

Yup, Greene, looks like you got it. BAMONA reports they are found in Texas and use Papaya as a host plant. Sphinx Moth caterpillars (not worms, FYI) often look scary with their horn on the back and strange eyespots.

Welcome to All Things Plants, @Inversino !

OMG, "strange eyespots" seems to me a huge understatement, Melanie! The photo looks like some kind of one-eyed snake... normally it's the spiny/hairy caterpillars that kind of gross me out but this one is even worse. But I do really like the sphinx moths... Smiling

And I forgot my manners. Welcome to ATP inversino.

Does the "mouth/lips" on this caterpillar look computer generated? I know that isn't the case...just reminds me...kept thinking they would start talking.. Whistling
