In case you guys didn't know, the Audubon Society has an app for your phone. Seriously, who doesn't have an app these days? Anyway, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, which is a couple hours south of me, is in a contest to win an iPad from the Audubon Society for their education center. I guess whichever Audubon Center gets the most people to download the app through their link wins. You can just go to the Audubon site to check it out, but if you want to help Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, download it through this link: http://www.audubon.org/apps?ut...

It seems like a pretty useful app for birders. And if it convinces you to help Corkscrew, they're the winter home of many Whooping Cranes. They were breeding last year for the first time in a few years because apparently we got just the right amount of rain at the right times. This year we've got an El Nino so I just assume everything is going to be wet and bad.

Wonderful shots Becky!!
It happens in a flash, but the memory of it last forever. It can not be borrowed or stolen, and it is of no earthly good until it is given away. So if in your hurry you meet someone who is too weary to smile, leave him one of yours, for no one needs a smile quite as much as he who has none to give...

I'm beginning to notice that I see more birds early in the morning and late in the evening. Especially my larger, water bird friends like the Egrets and Herons. I think maybe I'm driving by where they roost and during the day they're gone doing bird stuff.

I went outside this morning to do some gardening but first I had to fuel myself with some Starbucks. I could hear a lot of different birds and saw a few flying around so I figured I may as well try to take some pictures. This first one looked like a Dove to my naked eye and now that I see it on the computer, I still think that. It seemed small, though. The Mourning Doves I see are usually larger, but then again, I usually see them in places where people are feeding them so maybe I have a skewed sense of how big they are? Anyway, there were at least three of these. This one was on my property, and I watched it fly across the street to my neighbor's tree. But almost immediately it flew back to my tree with another Dove right behind it. And then a third one joined them. What do you guys think? Is this a Mourning Dove? I'm so used to seeing them on the ground or in the bird feeder at MOSI.

I couldn't quite tell what this one was but thought it was a female Cardinal. Now that I see it close up on the computer, I'm pretty sure.

Thumb of 2015-10-12/mellielong/59ee64 Thumb of 2015-10-12/mellielong/4b44d8

And then I saw a Red-Bellied Woodpecker. They're the only woodpecker I ever see around here. Sometimes I've seen as many as four or five but this one seemed to be alone.

Thumb of 2015-10-12/mellielong/7f86f2 Thumb of 2015-10-12/mellielong/c6f3b5

And just to give you some reference, this is the area I was seeing them in. Except the Cardinal; it was in my Black Cherry. That's my blue and white house on the right, my Ford Focus in the driveway, pine tree on the left which is mingling with the Live Oak, and that's the Red Cedar I planted next to the house.

Thumb of 2015-10-12/mellielong/8ce647

I saw the hummingbird today but couldn't get a picture. I was looking at my neighbor's Firecracker Fern (that thing to the right of the pine tree) and I saw something flying. At first, I thought it was a butterfly but it didn't look right. Then, it straightened and I realized it was the hummingbird! Of course, it realized I was there at the same time and zoomed off over the neighbor's house. Also, I keep hearing the owl but I doubt I'll spot it. It seems to be coming from a bit of a distance.

Great spotting, Melanie. You nailed all the birdie's names too.

My mourning doves that come to the feeder do vary in size quite a bit. Sometimes they're not much bigger than a grackle, but sometimes they're big enough to weigh down the spring mechanism on the feeder so that the seed ports shut . . . I figure it serves them right for being so fat! (it's a "squirrel-proof" feeder that is designed to shut if a squirrel gets on it).

Hooray, I'm learning! Hurray! When I think about it, I now know some of the Doves I've seen at MOSI are Eurasian Collared Doves so I may have been thinking of those. They are much bigger. At least, my book says so. Hilarious! No really, I saw one earlier this year and it was bigger.

You did great Melanie!!!! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

I'm betting you will se at times, Ground Doves - they are considerably smaller than the Mourning Doves or White winged doves. To me, they seem to have an overall darker coloring than the others - more brown in them than just being grey. here's a link but to me, the photos aren;t quite the correct color. The photos look the same grey as the other doves but I've always seen them darker/browner - still grey but a brown grey.

There are some more the color I'm talking about in the photo gallery in this link:

Please pardon all my typos. I'm not going to fix them. LOL! This is just an example of what will happen when posting early am before a cup of coffee .

Awesome photos Melanie! I agree, Mourning Dove, female Northern Cardinal and male Red-bellied WP! Hurray! on spotting a hummingbird! I've been hoping to have a few migrants pass through on their way south but haven't spotted one yet.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone! Mom and her church group are going on a dolphin-watching cruise later this month as their group activity. She was looking at the sites on Google Earth and I heard her say they would be stopping at Anclote Key. I know a lot of those islands out there are well-known nesting sites or just spots for the migratory birds to rest so I told her to take bird pictures for me. With winter coming, I hope I can spot some "new to me" birds!

Melanie - Wouldn't that be neat to visit an island and sit there or explore with a camera for a day to photograph the wildlife especially the birds. I think that would be a very, very interesting adventure! I hope your mother gets some neat birds to photograph. Thumbs up

I know there are some islands they don't let people on at all because of the birds and sea turtles. They usually announce it on the news around Memorial Day and Fourth of July since that's when a lot of people go boating. I think it's great that Floridians are generally very respectful of wildlife.

The Painted Buntings are returning!!! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

I have seen at least 2 unbanded males. But the big news is that I have photographed 1 banded male and 1 banded female the past 2 days. I contacted the bander and posted my sightings on ebird and PBOT.

Here are the two banded birds that were banded on 11/10/2014. The male was the very first bird banded at that time and the female was the second bird banded on that day! The female showed up at my feeder on Sunday and the male showed up today!
