Saw three today at Squaw Creek Game Refuge (built in the 1930s as a WPA project) in NW Missouri where I was volunteering for Family Day (part of my volunteer activity as a Missouri Master Naturalist).

We saw one loan bald eagle and in a matter of a few moments a pair. Confirmed via telephoto lense.

I look forward to Eagle Days there in early December. The refuge has 4 nests 3 of which are occupied every year. One pair has returned to the same nest for many years.

Exciting for me as I had not seen Bald Eagles for a long time.

Golden Eagles are observed there frequently.

For those of you unfamiliar with it, at the peak in winter it has numbers in the millions of Canada Snow Geese and is awesome to see. I missed the peak last year as they had left (going North), but a huge storm arose up North and several hundred thousand returned :-)

David ...

They are magnificent birds ...

Here's a link to some photos take in Trinity County in northern California where I live:

No, I don't take them for granted. Every time I see one, I am in awe.

David, I agree -- seeing a bald eagle is always exciting to me, even though they are quite common where I live (and make me a bit nervous for my cats when they fly over our yard...). I drove by one years ago that was feasting on some road kill on the shoulder of the road and couldn't believe how tall it looked, just standing there like that. Every time I see one I'm so grateful to live where they are a common sight!

Sandy ....

I used to feel the same way about the hawks in San Diego after I saw one carry off a small pet dog. YIKES !

No matter how common the bald eagles and other bird of prey are up here, when I see them, I feel like I have been blessed.
