I don't really consider myself to be much of a houseplant person, but I seem to be collecting some anyway. I have 3 types of bird's nest Sansevieria. I started out a yar ago buying a Golden Hanhii and it came withwhat I think is a hanhii in the same pot. They did well outside over the summer and I've taken a couple pups off them and more are growing. Just got a new one that is suppose to be Laurentii. Some of the database photos make it look taller. Does anyone grow it and know if it really does get to 3' like the database says? Anyone grow kirkii Silver Blue or Pulchia coppertone and have any to sell? Or other bird's nest ones?

They do get taller in time. They actually love bright light/sun. When kept indoors, it will keep trying to look for the sun, so the longer those leaves go. Our cold temps just tempers the growth a bit, but once it gets warm or it is kept on warm conditions, it will seek to grow taller looking for more bright light.

They get taller in the sense that the rosette compounds on itself (if this makes sense) and you have a "semi-tall" plant full of leaves. It won't get tall like 'Laurentii' tall, so I don't think 3' is correct.

I believe hahnii and bird's nest are both synonyms for this type of 'Snake Plant'

Susan, those are so pretty!! The birdsnest varieties of Sans don't get real tall but as Planto explained, they spread and they take on that compound habit. Then there are some Sansevieria trifasciata cultivars like ('Laurentii') that do grow 3 to 4 feet in height. Those types grow in both shade and full sun here in Florida and can be aggressive to the point of being a nuisance plant.

Thanks for the information. That is a wonderful clump of Golden Hahnii! Nice one on the left too. I 've removed the only 2 pups I've had so far, but may try letting them clump up more.

@Stush2019 is a wealth of information regarding Sans; he has all kinds (I see you both are from "up North," so maybe he has good advice for overwintering them too).

'Golden Hahnii' is more difficult than others and doesn't pup as readily for some people. It's extremely rot prone in the winter, so be very careful with winter watering. A super gorgeous plant, but I guess it has some strings attached.

When I see a picture of Gold Hahnii like that, the first thing I do is look where they are growing at. Like said, up north is very hard to winter over. Sans can live well down into the 50's. Some say even the 40's (degree Fahrenheit). Sans. trifasciata hahnii 'Gold Hahnii' seems to never leave the 60's and then only for a short time. I keep mine in a fish tank in my living room lighted 14 hrs. day. It stays in the 70's there. All other attempts I tried to keep this plant ended in failure. (root rot). Some other S. trifasciata is also demanding like similar colored but med-growing S.tri. 'Morgenstern's Futura Aurea'. Currently my favorite.



Or even harder is Sans. tri. Forescate.



Here's a picture of some of my Golden Hahnii. BTY, it's called "stacking" when they continue to keep growing up with lots of leaves.



And most are much easier to grow. Like Sansevieria kirkii Pulchra 'Coppertone'



Or the Sansevieria guineensis Metallica 'Tenzan'. Very undemanding.



And my regular tall growing Sans. trifasciata were reaching 50 inches. Had to use tomato cages to keep them looking good with out some leaves falling over.






Come spring when I take them out. We'll see what extras I can part with.

Stush, those are so impressive. I grew my Golden Hahnii in my Southwest facing kitchen window last winter and then moved it outside for the summer. It's back in the kitchen window again. May get down to 58 at night inside the house, but could be colder so near the window when it gets to 15 below.

The plant on the left in the photo can in the same pot as the Golden Hahnii. I've labeled it Hahnii, but wonder if it could be Zeylanica? Photos of these 2 look alike to me. Any thoughts?

I've ordered ballyi, Hahnii Silver Streaker and KIrkii Silver Blue. Hopefully they get here unfrozen. The Silver Blue I'm a little worried about since it is coming from Thailand.

If you ever have any of the Coppertone one and are interested in any of those 3. I would love to trade or buy one from you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Good to hear from an expert.

I am an expert in the school of hard knocks. For every success I have, I have two failures. Being here in these forums I have learned more in two years than my 40 or so years growing them. The name Zeylanica is much disputed. There is such a thing but is rarely offered due to it's plainess. Often Sans. trifasciata is what's offered. There is no dwarf Zeylanica. Some nurseries will call it that but it is S. trifasciata hahnii. I also have a Kirkii Silver Blue. Not impressive to me. The person who gave it to me lost his so I am going to send his back to him. They do start to look good after 5 years. I am careful to order overseas after loosing an $130 order that even paypal couldn't help me. Ended up at our custums being denied.

What ever is mine is yours. I owe you. I have an Hahnii Streaker that changed into a Hahnii variegated which looks a lot like Golden Hahnii. I will send you one of these. They are much hardier and not fussy. I only have a few and got them promised out to other sans collectors.

I'm good on the Stapelia. Both stem cuttings took and I also purchased two more to fill a hanging basket with. So I have plenty of this Stapelia. Thank you. I tell people who see it that it is a mouse eater. Just as soon as I get flowers which should be upcoming summer. I love telling my grand kids tall stories. It is a good fast growing plant. The Tiger Aloe you gave me tripled it's size but no flowers or pups. Strange for this one.

Okay Stush I thought you said the ones I sent you died.

The Tiger Aloe I had for 5 yrs before it started making babies. It was sent to me as a Christmas gift from a online friend in one of those arrangement florist.

This was what it looked like. I did not remove the tiger aloe because I did not want to get hurt by all the cactus in the pot.


Then 5 yrs later the plants grew so big the pot busted. Then I could see there were 3 babies in the pot. I sent out the two big ones and kept a small one to use in one of my aloe combo pots.

Yours looks so much better than mine. I kept mine in bright shade and it took on a whitish covering over the tiger stripes. Almost like some of the Aloe Haworthia hybrids. Next summer I'm giving it full sun. It did grow large. Some 16 or so leaves and about 1 ft. high. It is the show piece of my Aloe collection.

Stush, I'd love to see a photo of yours.

Stush, Full sun is what I grow it in and it barely had any soil. It is mostly aquarium gravel. The enormous amount of gravel is because I have it growing with cactus and I tend to kill them.

The only way I can avoid killing cactus in my house is to only use 2 tablespoons soil and the rest gravel. I had two very large fish tanks that I no longer use so I have been using the gravel in my succulent plant pots.

This bud should pop soon!

(I put the holes in the leaves after seeing a pic of someone else's plant that had grown a pup mid-leaf after getting a hole in it.)

Tiffany, Ouch and how can you do that?! Now you have to see that destruction for all the time you have those leaves on it. I would think the pup mid-leaf on a cut had to happen in moist hot conditions.
Deebie, I'm too lazy to take a picture. I wanted to take them all together. Got most tucked away for the winter in my cellar greenhouse. I just have a old picture of when I first got it.
It came with a u-shaped stem/rhizome.

You can see the other end of the rhizome sticking out the other side in the first picture.
