Went out to the area I've been working on for a while for some fresh air with my morning coffee and discovered several of these growing. I'm sure I could find it, but right now we're busy prepping for new windows in the house, so thought I would just upload it here real quick. It's in an area that gets a lot of willow leaves and pine needles.

What an interesting fungus. I haven't seen a black one. Looks like it could have been made out of melted rubber!

Helvella lacunosa I do believe. Helvella mitra is a synonym.

@needrain I agree, the pic looks like a block of melted rubber or candle wax.
