A friend wants to know what this plant is
Her description
Fleshy bulbs, mottled foliage. About 6" tall.

I can't see the mottled foliage, but the bulbous bases and description suggest Ledebouria socialis.

I agree with Janet. Ledebouria socialis would be my best guess also. Often sold under the common name 'Silver Squill'.

Silver Squill (Ledebouria socialis) was my first thought too ... there may be a photo of the bulbous section in the database for comparison.
