I have been given this houseplant and told it just lives with its roots in water. It's getting very straggly. Can anyone identify it and give advice. Many thanks.

I agree. It would need to have the water changed and fed often if it's going to live in just water. May I suggest putting it in a good potting soil? It would fare better.
