We can grow mahonia here in very sheltered locations, but I've never seen them fruit. Are they really edible? Never heard of it. Love the magpie. Sorry to hear about the storm; we're frozen solid here. 8F for a low on Saturday!

They taste bittersweet,..like Damsel or Plums and there are a huge amount of fruits on a tree,..mine was too tall and i had to remove four foot last summer,..only because the yellow flowers would be out of reach,..and sight.

Some images of the fruits when almost ripe,..1st picture is May 2015,..second is July 2013 so never predictable,..of course the fruits are green today which is far too early Shrug!

I am forever surprised and learning about some of my plants,..the name Mahonia was given due to it being an American Irishman Bernard McMahon residing in Philadelphia,..Bernard McMahon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bark of the bush can also be used for medicinal purposes,..never tried it Whistling for tummy trouble Shrug!
