|You could also use a pencil type soldering iron to melt the holes and be able to contain the fumes better. And you could do it outdoors. I use a soldering iron to melt holes in cups all the time when I make my sparkleballs (see my picture).
I'm not recommending this site, just showing what kind of soldering iron I am talking about. You can find cheaper ones a lot of places.
Avoid breathing the fumes.
