I know it's a variety of fern peony that came from Germany (Prussia) in the 1800's, brought to the states by a great-great aunt.

Maybe Paeonia anomala native to that end of the world.

Thanks Daisy Thank You! - I pulled up some pictures of Paeonia anomala and at least one of them looks nearly identical! Smiling Hurray!
