I've looked for these often in wild areas but have found very few over the years and usually in an old burn site so I was very surprised to find this hidden under a Peruvian Lily (Scilla peruviana) the rest of the plants are large shrub roses that all got a large topdressing of hoarse manure. I've left it in place with the hope of a bushel full next year. I'll slice it down the middle some time later to key it out and I might bruise it tomorrow but it may be to old for that. I'm fairly sure it's what we used to call Morchella esculenta now Morchella rufobrunnea. Still yummy with either name. They sell these and many other mushrooms wild and cultivated just a few blocks from here....maybe a spore blew in.

Yes it's a Morel which is the common name for the genus Morchella. So much fun for me to forage for food! There hard to find here. Burn sites are good I hear. I tip my hat to you.
