True. Doves never do have a ruffled feather do they?

I have never seen them bathing (that's possibly a different story) but every time I see them, their feathers look super smooth.

I've seen them sitting in the bird baths Hilarious!

I have also read that sparrows will run into doves and knock feathers loose to use in building their nest

I have seen them just sitting in bird baths as well but never actually bathing. I believe Doves bathe in the dirt by taking dirt baths but I can not swear to that.

I think they take showers , sitting in the branches or on wires in the rain.

the only time they are usually not sitting seems to be when they are eating or courting.

I had a dove not sitting or eating or courting today - battling with one of the red-bellied woodpeckers on the feeder, wish I'd snagged a picture of it. The woodpecker poked at the dove with that long beak, then the dove fluffed up and raised his wings up in quite a threatening manner, and the woodpecker took a couple of looks and flew off. The dove looked easily twice the size of the woodpecker when he got his feathers all ruffled.

Those woodpeckers can usually intimidate all the other birds, even the bluejays, but not that dove! Tomorrow, I will have the camera at the ready again, c/w the memory card installed . . . Rolling my eyes. *Blush*

Elaine, I've seen the same thing happen at my feeders. A dove flew onto the feeder and chased a woodpecker and a blue jay off. I was so surprised to see such a thing!

Yes, very interesting about the sweet and peaceful dove. Rolling my eyes.

I know some birds do like to take dirt baths, my chickens do it often. They're dusting for small mites, trying to get rid of them. They do something else - we call "Anting" where they lay their wings out. The other day I could see a group of cute little birdies, I think they are Wrens, out on the logs from a tree we had to cut down. I noticed them because they were making quite a lot of noise.
