The leaves are quite velvety.

Does it have square stems? Odor when leaves are crushed?

Appears to be a Ruellia. I'd guess Wild Petunia (Ruellia humilis) , but am not sure how common that species is where you are.

Ruellia isn't common, no... I've never planted it, either, so I'd be surprised if that's what it is...

I'll have to see about the odor, which I should have checked. I'm thinking maybe it's a salvia of some type.

It's a round stem, no scent.

This did turn out to be ruellia, though I have no idea where it would have come from--I've never planted it. Must have been mixed with some of the seed I planted last year.

Apparently a few Ruellia are found in Maryland: http://www.marylandplantatlas....

I have R. humilis and it has velvety leaves but I'm not sure about the others.
Carolina Wild Petunia (Ruellia caroliniensis)
Wild Petunia (Ruellia humilis)
Limestone Wild Petunia (Ruellia strepens)
Pursh's Wild Petunia (Ruellia purshiana)

Oh, good to know there are some native ruellias. Maybe a bird dropped it...
