Plant ID forum: What plant is this?

This plant was found near the lower Deschutes River and picked by a friend, even though I don't condone picking flowers grown in the wild I was wondering what kind of plant grew this flower!

Was the foliage prickly and sticky? It looks like Giant Blazingstar (Mentzelia laevicaulis), a plant native to desert regions of the Western U.S. and Western Canada.

Thanks Daniel. I had an advantage on this one - I live in the desert in the western U.S. Here's a photo of a volunteer 'weed' growing in my yard in July:
