I'm new to growing crocosmia(2nd year) and this year collected seeds from Lucifer. Has anyone tried growing the seeds and what was your success?

I am interested in an answer to this too. I have the regular orange crocosmia which spreads so much from corms developing that I don't bother with seeds at all. But, I bought a few yellow crocosmia that I would love to get a few more patches going. I did not cut any of the blooms, so there is plenty of seed production. Don't know anything about how the seeds will behave, etc.

I guess no one else has ever done it . So Evan, looks like you'll be the one to tell us how it goes. Can you tell me what you did for planting them? When I looked at one of the photos posted on the plant database showing crocosmia seeds, mine look so tiny next to the ones in the photo. Blinking How big were your seeds?

My Lucifers go nuts here, and bloom their heads off, but I've never seen a seedling.

I just scratched up an empty spot, spread the seeds out and covered 'em up. Big Grin

Okay, it looks like I'll hold off trying to do anything with the seeds over the winter. Why waste space Sad

How about winter sowing them in jugs and setting them out?
I have had good success with many seeds that way. I have no crocosmia seed but i was successful with blackberry-lily using the wintersown method.

Julia, with your beautiful gardens, how can something not grow for you? I've been looking at this plant in garden books and considering trying to grow it. It looks so pretty in the catalogs, so whimsical looking.

Thank you for the compliment. I have the Lucifer already and they are quite stunning when in bloom.Hopefully they come back this year. I purchased last fall some orange ones (no name) from a seller on Ebay and just planted those bulbs a couple of weeks ago. You made me think about whether I should try for some yellow ones. I've given up the idea of trying to grow them from seed for now. I have so much I'm already starting from seed that my house is becoming a nursery. Rolling my eyes.

How do you all handle these plants? I have the common orange, but they grow huge foliage and flop over. Frankly getting a little tired of them.

Harold: I haven't experienced the foliage on the Lucifer flopping over. We get high winds here and they stayed upright. BUT, I haven't seen the oranges ones yet, so time will tell if they have thinner/weaker foliage.

Cinda: I was thinking the same thing Rolling my eyes.

Mine flop. I plant them next to plants that will hold them up.
