|My mother bought this plant some time ago--purely for aesthetics--and recently I noticed that it was growing legumes of some sort. I was wondering if it was edible. She threw the tag away pretty much the moment she got it planted, so I have nothing to go on. Perhaps you all can help?
Some other features to note is that there are five petals per flower, both the legume pod and the green stalks are kinda fuzzy but it's not noticeable unless you look closely. The main tree is woodsy.

|Looks like one of the cassias...l
Really can't tell much from the bleached out pic... Try taking pics in the early morning or late evening so the subtropical sunlight doesn't wash out the colour.
Don't eat cassia seed...
Or any of the other rattle pods...

|Yes, Cassia. If you are on the west coast, I would guess Cassia Fistula (Golden Shower Tree).
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost

|Where is this growing? What zone or what state?
It looks like Senna Pendula but that will die in zones above zone 10.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others.
