I have large planters in the patio, which when full of dirt, are too heavy to move and expensive to fill. In the past I have filled them 1/2 way with the styrofoam peanuts. I don't think my plants liked that. What suggestions do you have?

I use pine cones with success. I have heard of some people using plastic soda bottles also.
