I had a row of iris that didn't bloom well. Over time they had gotten covered with dirt and we put bark mulch over them. I have now replanted them and the rhizomes are laying nicely on top of the dirt. I'm fearful that if we have a cold winter that they will be too exposed ????
I have cold winters too and never lost an iris to frost, so I don't think you need to worry. What they do not like is sitting in wet soil or having the rhizomes covered and it sounds like you fixed that already!
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!
