|Hi Philip, I have Golden Barrel (Echinocactus grusonii) cacti in my yard in Phoenix, AZ. They are hardy down to about 15 degrees F if they are dry. I don't water them at all in the winter. They only get an occasional small bit of rain.

|A lot of the Echinocereus are cold hardy to much lower than 18 degrees. Two of my favorites are Strawberry Hedgehog (Echinocereus engelmannii) and Claret Cup (Echinocereus coccineus). They are both native to the American west. I know, no long reading assignments but here is a page from my favorite nursery, Cold Hardy Cactus. You can read a page....
There are a ton of cold hardy cactus - I have a cactus garden here in Zone Reno but Echinocereus are the best barrels.
