Ask a Question forum: Some Dead leaves still on Diablo ninebark after the fall season

My ninebark did have mildew on it this summer. Should I prune off the branches where dead leaves are still on before winter? Is this due to the mildew?

Welcome! I'm in Ontario, Canada USDA Zone 4 and both my ninebarks still have a few leaves yet to fall off. Neither plant had powdery mildew. If you're in a similar climate it is generally best to avoid pruning at this time of year because the cool damp fall weather can let fungal diseases get started into the cuts. What woud be a good idea is to rake up and remove from the garden the dead leaves that have already fallen, plus the others when they do fall, to reduce overwintering of the powdery mildew fungus.
